What Austin will take, what has to be prepared first, and where the rest goes. The city’s own pages call this bulk collection, which is the phrase to look for on their site.

- Refrigerators and freezers
- Take the doors off. Austin publishes nothing at all about refrigerant for this service, so ask when you book if that matters to you.
- Appliances
- Doors off, and they go in the metal pile.
- Passenger car tires
- Rims off, eight per household, and in their own pile. Truck and tractor tires are not collected.
- Lawn mowers
- Drain the gas and oil first.
- Lumber
- Free of nails and tightly bound.
- Railroad ties
- Cut in half, nothing over 5 feet.
- Carpet
- Household carpet only. Carpet out of a construction or demolition job is not collected.
Not this collection. Here is what does take it4
- Brush
- Austin runs brush as its own on-demand collection, with its own three appointments a year.
- Hazardous materials
- Book a household hazardous waste collection instead. It is one of your on-demand services and takes paint, thinners, automotive fluids, pesticides, pool chemicals, batteries and propane cylinders up to 1lb.
- Household trash
- Use your weekly cart. Anything bagged or boxed is treated as extra trash and can attract an extra fee.
- Cardboard boxes
- Break them down for recycling.
Not collected, and the city names nowhere to take it3
- Construction and remodeling debris
- Plywood, bricks, rocks, cinder blocks, stone, concrete, sheet rock, insulation, flooring, shingles, siding, roofing, sheet glass and mirrors are all excluded. The city names no alternative for them.
- Automotive chassis, bodies, motorcycles, boats and trailers
- Not collected. The city names no alternative.
- Tile, whole or broken
- Counted as construction debris.
The rules for everything above
How much
- Three bulk appointments per calendar year, counted separately from brush and from household hazardous waste.
- Eight passenger tires per household.
- Nothing in bags, boxes or containers. Those count as extra trash and can attract an extra fee.
- Run out of appointments and the city will collect more for a fee based on the weight.
Where it goes
- Three separate piles: metal and rigid plastics, non-metal, and tires.
- 5 feet clear of your carts, mailbox, fences or walls, water meter, phone and electrical boxes, hydrants and parked cars.
- Nothing under low tree limbs or power lines.
- Not in an alley, not in front of a vacant lot, and not in front of a business. Those are not collected.
When to put it out
- At the curb by 5:30am on your appointment day.
- Book first. Items put out without an appointment are not collected.
- Appointments cannot be changed once booked, only cancelled.
What Austin does not say
Austin publishes no answer for whether the refrigerant in a fridge matters, or who removes it, mattresses and box springs, any length limit on carpet, the earliest you may put things out, only that they must be out by 5:30am, any total quantity or weight limit, or any penalty for getting it wrong. Ask them directly if it matters to you.
