Grass, leaves, weeds and clippings
Bag it and tie it. Loose green waste is not collected.
Tree trimmings
Cut to under 12 inches thick and 4 feet long. Trunks and stumps bigger than that are not taken.
Construction and demolition material
Only pieces under 25 pounds and under 4 feet long.
Metal and car parts
Only pieces under 20 pounds and under 4 feet long.
Wooden pallets
Two at most.

Refrigerators and freezers
Not in a bulk trash pile. Phoenix collects them on a separate appliance pickup for $25 an item, and you have to take the doors, hinges, lids, glass shelves and latches off first. Call 602-262-6251.
Air conditioners
Anything using refrigerant is excluded from bulk trash. It goes on the $25 appliance pickup.
Tires
Any shape or size. Five passenger tires a year, rims off. No off-road, semi or motorcycle tires.City transfer stations, north and southNorth Gateway, 30205 N. Household hazardous waste
Antifreeze, pool chemicals, oil, batteries and paint. Phoenix collects these free from your home once a year, left by your garage or front door rather than at the curb.
Bricks, concrete, dirt, rock, asphalt and shingles
Not in a bulk pile, but you can take it yourself.City transfer stations, north and south
Loose trash and ordinary household waste
Use your regular containers.

Glass
Windows, shower doors, patio doors, mirrors and fluorescent tubes are all excluded.
Shared piles with a neighbor
Every household needs its own appointment and its own pile.

The rules for everything above

How much

  • One pile, no more than 10 cubic yards, roughly 17 feet by 4 by 4.
  • Four collections a year. Cancel at least two business days ahead and it does not count against them.

Where it goes

  • At the curb, parallel to the street, no more than 5 feet from the street or the front edge of your property.
  • At least 5 feet clear of anything fixed, and never on top of a water meter.
  • Not in the alley, even if your carts go there.

When to put it out

  • Book first, then put it out, and no earlier than 7 days before your appointment.
  • Out by 5:30am on the day. Collection starts at 6am.
  • Putting anything out more than 7 days early, or with no appointment booked, is against the city ordinance.

If you get it wrong

  • A civil sanction of $100 to $2,500, and it is also a Class 1 misdemeanor. Every day it stays out counts as a separate offense. That is the penalty for the whole chapter, Phoenix City Code section 27-35, and putting bulk trash out more than seven days before your appointment is made unlawful by section 27-22(A).

What Phoenix does not say

Phoenix publishes no answer for mattresses and box springs, carpet and rugs, televisions and other electronics, whether a washer, dryer or stove can go in a bulk pile, as opposed to the paid appliance pickup, or how much an early set-out costs. Ask them directly if it matters to you.
