New York large item pickup
What New York will take, what has to be prepared first, and where the rest goes. The city’s own pages call this large items, which is the phrase to look for on their site.
New York large items: what you can put out

Put it out as it is2
- Couches, tables, dressers and other furniture
- Set out on your trash day rather than your recycling day.
- Washers, dryers and stoves
- Mostly metal, so these go out with recycling rather than with trash.
Put it out, but get it ready first5
- Refrigerators and freezers
- DSNY removes the refrigerant itself, free, and puts a sticker on the appliance; it is collected with your recycling after that. The exception is the one worth knowing: newer units using R600a or R32 refrigerant cannot be collected at all, and the city tells you to contact the manufacturer or a private carter instead.
- Air conditioners and dehumidifiers
- Same as a refrigerator. DSNY removes the CFC/Freon free of charge, and cannot take a unit containing R600a or R32.
- Mattresses and box springs
- Must be sealed in a plastic bag before it goes out, to stop bed bugs spreading. There is a fine for getting this wrong and the city's own pages disagree about how much, so the requirement is the part to act on.
- Rugs and carpeting
- Rolled up and tied with twine, set out with trash.
- Glass furniture, windows and mirrors
- Not recyclable, so these go out with trash rather than with recycling. Broken glass is double-bagged.
Not this collection. Here is what does take it1
- Televisions, computers and monitors
- Illegal to put out with trash or recycling, under the New York State Electronic Equipment Recycling and Reuse Act. The city points to retail and non-profit drop-offs, community e-waste events, Special Waste Drop-Off sites, SAFE Disposal events, manufacturer takeback, and ecycleNYC for buildings of 10 or more units.

How much
- Up to 6 large items per collection day.
- A large item is anything too big to fit in a bin or bag.
Where it goes
- Metal and rigid plastic items go out with recycling. Everything else goes out on a trash day, not a recycling day.
When to put it out
- After 6:00 PM the night before, for buildings of 1 to 9 units using secure bins.
- After 8:00 PM the night before, for buildings of 10 or more units putting bags straight on the curb.
- Out by midnight, or collection is not guaranteed.
If you get it wrong
- The city does not publish a figure we can stand behind. Its furniture page and its collection-laws page give different amounts for a mattress that is not sealed in plastic, and neither cites a code section.
What New York does not say
New York publishes no answer for Where at the curb a large item should be placed., Whether appliance doors have to be removed or the unit sealed., Any penalty for setting material out before the permitted hour., What a mattress fine actually is: two city pages give different amounts and neither names the law it comes from., or Whether tires or building debris are taken, which we have not read.. Ask them directly if it matters to you.
